Porcelain vs Natural Stone Patios

Published on 28 September 2026 at 23:04

Porcelain is manufactured, so the colour and pattern are consistent and can convincingly mimic slate, limestone, oak or concrete. It suits modern gardens and new-build estates in places like Widnes and Ellesmere Port, and it delivers clean, crisp lines.

Natural stone, such as sandstone, limestone, slate or granite, has real variation in tone and texture. Each slab is different, which suits period properties, cottage-style gardens and older homes around Frodsham and rural Cheshire.

Maintenance

Porcelain is non-porous, so it resists moss, algae and staining and usually needs only a regular sweep and occasional wash. Natural stone is porous. Most types benefit from sealing, and unsealed sandstone can stain from leaves, barbecue grease and red wine, and may need cleaning more often.

Durability

Porcelain is extremely hard and colour-fast, so it won't fade in sunlight, and it copes well with frost. Natural stone is also long-lasting, but softer stones can weather, flake or change colour with age. Some homeowners actually like that weathered patina.

Slip resistance

Quality outdoor porcelain is rated for wet conditions (look for an R11 rating or a high wet pendulum value). Natural stone varies: riven sandstone grips well, while polished or smooth stone can become slick. See our separate guide on whether porcelain gets slippery.

Cost

Both sit at similar overall price points once installed, though it varies with the stone or tile chosen. Imported sandstone can be cheaper per slab than premium porcelain, but sealing and maintenance add to long-term cost. Porcelain is often more expensive to install because it needs more careful cutting and bedding.

Which should you choose?

Choose porcelain if you want low maintenance, a contemporary look or a very consistent finish. Choose natural stone if you want authentic character, texture and a look that suits a traditional property.
